ECO CHALLENGE - WEEK 2: Waste Reduction #saynotoplastic
By 2050 it is estimated that there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. It is both our duty & responsibility to not let this happen.
Did you know that one in four fish tested contains plastic? This plastic is entering the food chain and is being indulged by us, increasing the likelihood of cancer, a weakened immunity, endocrine trouble & other illnesses it is also impacting fertility and pregnancy. Since 1950, 6 million tonnes of plastic has become waste with 10% of plastic waste being thrown into the ocean annually.
It is crucial, now more than ever, that we #saynotoplastic by adopting behaviors such as bringing our own bag, using a reusable cup, bulk buying & selecting loose fruits & veggies! For more tips, please have a read of our Plastic Free July blog!
To help reduce your general waste, here are some tips:
Use a reusable bottle.
Try not to waste food & maybe try growing your own.
Try to recycle & compost appropriate food as often as you can.
Try to purchase second-hand items & give away used goods to charities.
Try to reduce your use of paper, for example, swap your paper bills, receipts, and magazines for electronic ones.
Try to shop locally - local markets & shops usually use a lot less plastic when wrapping their food.
Bring your own eco-friendly, sustainable straws and say no to plastic straws when at a restaurant or coffee shop to save the extra plastic.
Try to drink loose, leaf tea. Did you know that teabags contain plastic? Drinking loose leaf tea from a teapot with an infuser is the new way to go!
Instead of using single-use parchment paper or foil, try to replace this with a more sustainable material, such as silicone mats.
You could see if your area has a vegetable box scheme? Many areas will have this scheme where you can purchase a box of fresh, seasonal veggies from a local farm delivered to your door - doesn’t sound too bad!
This week there will be another short quiz featured on our Instagram focussed on #saynotoplastic that will test your knowledge on plastic waste! The winner will receive a 50% discount OFF all TerraMavi products!
