ECO CHALLENGE WEEK 1: The Story of Plastic Free July

Quiz is pending on the below info, so read carefully!

Once upon a time there was a woman named Rebecca Prince-Ruiz who was working in Australia & was utterly shocked when she saw the amount of plastic waste produced from a recycling area there.

Wanting to change her own behaviour, in 2011, Rebecca’s ‘Plastic Free July’ idea became famous to the world, which she never believed would become a campaign or a global movement.

She felt strongly about encouraging individuals globally to spread awareness of the amount of single-use disposable plastic packaging there is within our lives & to help people reduce it. Initially, 40 co-workers joined Rebecca in her challenge to limit her single-use plastic consumption.

To reduce her plastic waste, Rebecca utilised reusable menstrual products and limited her food waste by making stock from wilted vegetables & making homemade pastry. She focussed on making small, incremental changes.

Now let’s fast-forward to the year 2020, where 326 million people participated. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the campaign! Join us in following a Plastic Free July!
